Rip currents and elevated surf
The NWS has extended a Beach Hazard Statement through Friday for the Orange County and San Diego County coastlines. While the entire southern region is seeing increased surf activity, environmental factors indicate that Orange County may experience slightly more noticeable impacts.
What to expect:
- Elevated Surf Conditions: Breaking waves averaging 3 to 6 feet, with occasional larger sets reaching up to 7 feet. These conditions will be most visible along south-facing beaches.
- King Tides: The arrival of king tides will cause higher-than-normal water levels, which naturally reduces the amount of dry beach available during peak hours.
- Increased Rip Currents: The combination of a southerly swell and shifting tidal heights creates stronger rip currents, requiring extra awareness for swimmers and surfers.
For the remainder of the Southern California coast, the southerly swell and elevated tides are expected to bring increased surf and rip current activity through Wednesday night.
Coastal Flooding Advisory for Malibu Coast
In addition to the surf advisories, a Coastal Flooding Threat is in place through Monday night for specific low-lying areas near the shoreline.
This advisory primarily impacts the south-facing beaches along the Malibu coast.
