This Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day experience is a beautiful fusion of culture and cinema at a landmark location.
WE Drive-Ins will be taking over the iconic Santa Monica Sears parking lot to screen Hollywood’s latest movie releases, starting February 11. Cinephiles will experience the simmering anticipation of films fresh off the Sundance circuit within a setting steeped in history.
This exciting return of cinema-going opens with Lee Isaac Chung’s Oscar contender film Minari, which follows a Korean American family’s pursuit of the American Dream. It will screen nightly through February 25. The next feature film will be another Best Picture favorite Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand as a woman who embarks on a journey through the American West after losing everything.
The Mark 302 lot in the heart of Santa Monica became a local landmark shortly after World War II. After remaining vacant for what feels like forever, the owner and developer of Seritage Growth Properties has given WE Drive-Ins exclusive lease of the property, marking a new era for the arts in the community and helping local family-run businesses thrive.
Each vehicle will receive one WE Experience Pack full of curated treats—yes, that includes popcorn. It also includes beverages, reserved VIP parking, and vouchers from local and national partners worth more than $30. All other essential movie concessions will be on offer too.
As we already know, the pandemic has been a significant catalyst in the drive-in theater renaissance, with cooped up households seeking collective experiences from the safety of their cars and the nostalgic escape of a bygone time. While that’s carried us through the last few months, this signals a departure from the reruns and a return of the novelty of first runs and cherished memories with loved ones.
After Minari, fans can look forward to showings of Nomadland and other first run features.
