Keeping bus lanes clear is crucial for smooth and timely public transportation. When vehicles block these lanes, buses get stuck in traffic just like other cars, causing delays for thousands of commuters every day. In fact, illegally parking in bus lanes is one of the most common reasons drivers get ticketed around L.A.
To tackle this problem, the city of West Hollywood is partnering with Metro to launch the Bus Lane Enforcement Program aimed at keeping bus lanes and stops free of parked vehicles. Starting July 1, 2025, WeHo will begin a 60-day warning period where drivers illegally parked in bus lanes or stops along N. La Brea Avenue will receive mailed notices.
These lanes run both northbound and southbound from Fountain Avenue to Romaine Street. After September 2, fines of at least $293 will be issued to violators to encourage drivers to keep these important lanes open for buses. The goal is to ensure buses can move freely without being blocked by parked cars.
To enforce this, select buses will be equipped with AI-powered cameras that detect when a vehicle is illegally parked in a bus lane or stop. When a violation is spotted, the system records it and sends the evidence to West Hollywood authorities for review. If confirmed, a citation will be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner.
