Mel’s Drive In on Sunset Blvd. will be back this Friday and they’re bringing back their 1947 burger prices for the occasion.
If you’ve missed the retro nostalgia of Mel’s neon-lit carhop service and the delicious classic American food, then here’s some news that will get you through the week: The Sunset Blvd. location will reopen on February 26 and the brand-new All American Smash Burger will cost just 40 cents—the original 1947 price. While it will be open for its usual all-day hours, these old-school prices will only apply between 12 and 4 p.m. On Saturday you’ll be able to catch Saturday catch their roller-skating carhops from 12 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
If you’re not familiar with the juicy new addition to the menu, then all you need to know about the All American stack is that it houses sustainably raised grass-fed beef from Marin Sun Farms between the buns. And, of course, you get to devour one for a fraction of the usual cost. You’ll only be able to try one for that price, however, and only while supplies last. So polish up those wheels and roll in early this Friday.
Like most restaurants, Mel’s has been through a tough time over the last year with the owner saying that Covid has proven to be the most challenging time in their whole 73 year history. The family business has continued to adapt by focusing on outdoor dining, reviving the carhop service, introducing al fresco movie nights and improving all health and safety measures.
There’s nothing that matches the late-night dining, the roller-skating waitresses on Saturdays or seeing the gleaming lowriders that frequent this beloved establishment, so hopefully things remain open for good this time.
