While filming their latest project in Los Angeles, actors Kerry Washington and Ben Affleck intentionally sought out locations that speak to the city’s complex history.
They notably utilized a home designed by the pioneering African American architect Paul Williams. The movie, titled ‘Animal’, is officially releasing and streaming on Netflix this Friday.

Washington pointed out that the production had the rare opportunity to shoot inside one of Williams’s residential designs.
The historic African American architect is deeply embedded in local history. He is known for his extensive work on the Beverly Hills Hotel and residences for figures like Frank Sinatra.
Despite his significant contributions, Williams faced systemic housing discrimination. He was prohibited from living in many of the exclusive neighborhoods where he built homes—including the very neighborhood used in the film.
Washington noted that working within this space offered a meaningful way to honor his architectural legacy.
Capturing the wider city
The commitment to showcasing authentic local spaces extended beyond residential architecture.
Affleck emphasized a directorial focus on capturing the everyday fabric of Los Angeles. He wanted to step away from traditional, overused backdrops.
The production filmed at a community center in Boyle Heights. Affleck selected this location to reflect the dynamic and active nature of the neighborhood.
Additionally, the crew shot scenes at the downtown Farmers Market to ground the film in recognizable, everyday environments.
By bringing the production into these distinct areas, the filmmakers present a genuine cross-section of the city. This approach highlights the true variety, diversity, and enduring spirit of Los Angeles.
