If you enjoy stargazing, Mount Wilson Observatory is hosting a special evening under the stars this weekend.
The observatory is teaming up with the Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS) for a public star party, where visitors can look through telescopes set up by local astronomy enthusiasts.
The event takes place on November 7th and is open to all ages. No reservations are needed, so visitors can simply show up and enjoy the night sky.
What to expect at a stargazing party
The star party will take place in the upper parking lot of Mount Wilson Observatory. Members of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society will bring their own telescopes so visitors can get a closer look at the night sky.
Visitors are encouraged to bring red flashlights to help them see in the dark without disturbing others’ night vision.
Keep in mind that the event does not include access to the observatory’s famous 60-inch or 100-inch telescopes. The rest of the grounds will also be closed to visitors.
How to attend Mount Wilson Observatory
Admission is free, but donations are welcome at the entrance. The money raised will support the educational programs and public outreach of Mount Wilson Observatory and the Los Angeles Astronomical Society.
The event is suitable for families, but pets are not allowed. Since the observatory sits about 5,700 feet above sea level, visitors with heart or breathing conditions should take extra care.
The event is wheelchair accessible. Just let the parking attendant know if you need accessible parking.
