Under various categories and with over 1,300 votes submitted, the California State Parks Foundation set out on a mission: to select the best local parks according to their own visitors. From best beach to best hiking spot, there’s one category that stands out for outdoor lovers…
According to the Foundation’s poll results, one coastal state park clearly takes the crown as the best camping spot. Why? Coastal fog, kayaking adventures, and views of the iconic and massive rock formation make this a camping destination unlike any other.
Already guessed? Yes, we’re talking about Morro Bay, in San Luis Obispo County.
Located about 190 miles (around a three-hour drive) from L.A., this spot is famous for its surreal and massive rock that steals every gaze, making every panoramic view and photo look like it’s straight out of a dream.

But that’s not all. Here, you can explore local wildlife such as sea otters, harbor seals, great blue herons, and occasionally migrating gray whales. And there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy, either. You can kayak through the calm bay waters to get up close to marine life and the iconic rock itself.
Hiking trails like the Morro Bay State Park trails offer scenic views and chances to spot birds and other animals. For a relaxing day, visit the Embarcadero to enjoy fresh seafood, local shops, and boat tours. Don’t forget to check out the nearby tide pools, perfect for discovering fascinating sea creatures during low tide.
