California redwoods are one of the most breathtaking staples in the state, reaching hundreds of feet into the sky with thick, golden bark and deep green needles. While NorCal has many places to see these giants, taking a trip down the Avenue of the Giants is arguably the simplest way to experience them up close.
This 31-mile road, officially known as State Route 254, runs alongside Highway 101 through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. As its nickname suggests, driving this two-lane path, you will be surrounded by massive trees, twisting through stunning forest groves.
Exploring the Avenue of the Giants
Even if you have seen redwoods before, this road (often called the “finest forest drive in the world”) still offers plenty of surprises. Beyond the huge trees lining the pavement, you can find unique attractions like a house built inside a tree and spots where you can actually drive your car through a redwood trunk.
Because this area is part of a rainforest, you should expect some damp weather. Summer offers the most sun, but it also brings the biggest crowds, which can make the experience feel rushed. For a quieter trip, consider visiting in late spring or early fall. Even winter can be a great time to go, as the roads are empty and the weather often stays mild enough for a comfortable drive.
Spring brings bright green growth to the forest floor, while fall offers changing leaves and beautiful golden light for photos.
What you need to know before you go
The Avenue of the Giants is open year-round and easy to visit with minimal planning. Even on warm days, the shade from the towering trees can feel chilly, so layers are recommended.
The road only closes during extreme weather, usually due to flooding from the Eel River or fallen trees. If visiting during storms, check local forecasts and park updates beforehand. Cell service is limited, so download maps in advance, though the route is clearly marked and easy to follow.
