Custom license plates have long been a way for drivers to make their cars truly their own. Whether it’s a retro design, a catchy phrase, or a unique color scheme, these plates let people add a personal touch that stands out on the road. From classic cars to daily drivers, specialty plates give every vehicle a little extra personality.
To celebrate the tradition, car rental company Sixt studied the most popular custom license plates in the U.S., and it turns out that California’s 1960s Legacy Plate ranks as the fifth most popular custom plate in the country.
Since its reintroduction in 2012, it has given 787,236 cars a distinctive vintage style. With its retro black-and-gold design, the plate offers a nostalgic nod to classic California cruising and remains a favorite for drivers who want to make their cars stand out.
With California at No. 5, the top four spots in the national ranking go to:
- Kentucky’s Blue and White Horse Plate.
With over 2 million sold, this 2004 design celebrates the Bluegrass State and its iconic horses.
