Background on City Club LA
The story behind City Club LA has an unexpected link to British royalty and racial discrimination. In 1984, when Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited LA, he was taken by the city mayor, Tom Bradley, to speak at a club. However, the mayor was denied entry because of the color of his skin. Both men walked away.
This experience drove Mayor Bradley to work with the city council to pass an ordinance preventing clubs from having discriminatory membership practices. This led to the opening of the City Club LA in 1989. The club initially stood downtown LA on the Wells Fargo Building’s 54th floor. From there, it moved to its current location in the City National Plaza.
