California is full of amazing places like sunny beaches, tall mountains, and wide valleys that seem to go on forever. No matter which landscape you prefer, there’s always something new to see. It’s a place that makes you want to explore and enjoy nature, showing that some things are just too big and beautiful to describe with words…
California’s towering sequoia wonder
Located in Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park, this giant sequoia rises approximately 268.1 ft tall, making it one of the largest trees in the world. Its massive trunk and expansive canopy showcase the remarkable scale and longevity of these ancient giants.
Sequoias are able to grow so tall due to a combination of genetic factors, abundant rainfall, rich soil, and a thick, fire-resistant bark that protects them from disease and wildfires, Save The Redwoods explains.
How General Grant became the nation’s Christmas tree
As NPS explains, the tradition began in 1924 when R.J. Senior, visited the park with a young girl who said “what a wonderful Christmas tree”, once up-close General Grant.
The following year, with the help of Charles E. Lee, the first Christmas program was held at the tree, and in 1926 President Calvin Coolidge officially designated it as the Nation’s Christmas Tree. Over the years, the ceremonies have drawn people who return to celebrate the spirit of the season.
