Who’s ready to ranch like Ian Bohen?
The California native and star of Yellowstone and Teen Wolf showed us around Pioneertown’s newest pop-up ranch from Habit Burger – and he opened up about his own ranching past.
“My grandfather had a cattle ranch, and I would spend summers there when I was a boy,” Bohen tells Secret Los Angeles. “I was born and raised in Central California in the Monterey Bay, a little town called Carmel.”
There with his grandfather, he got into team roping, horseback riding, and more.
“When Yellowstone came along, it was a match made in heaven,” he says.
His ranching upbringing assisted on Yellowstone, as production began writing his abilities into the show – no stuntmen needed.
“There’s a magic about being on a 1500-pound animal and, like, surfing. All of the power is outside of you. You go with it, and it can destroy you. But when it lines up, the movement, it’s out of this world. You’re riding that wave. You gotta be careful because you can get hurt.”
While he grew up on a ranch, Bohen wouldn’t consider himself a cowboy.
“It is a lifestyle, it’s a religion,” he says. “It is something that you do every day and every moment of your existence. The real cowboys do it different. I play one.”
No matter where he is, his love for California shines through.
“I’m a seaside kid. I love the ocean. I love the sun. I love the sand. That California feel. It’s in all the songs and all the movies. It’s in the sunset, behind the Pacific every night, and if you’ve ever been there, you know.”
We caught up with Bohen at Habit Burger’s ranch pop-up in Pioneertown, California. The iconic burger spot hosted a gathering where cowpokes could make their own ranch alongside Bohen and live out their cowboy fantasies.
