But fear not, not so far beyond the city limits, the region is filled with hidden swimming spots, shaded forests, and massive freshwater escapes where you can cool off without spending a fortune. One of the best options for a budget-friendly day trip is Castaic Lake, a sprawling reservoir where you can swim, picnic, fish, and enjoy the outdoors.

Located about 41 miles northwest of DTLA, Castaic Lake is the largest reservoir in the County. It has a designated swimming area that is free to access, making it one of the most affordable ways to spend a hot summer day outdoors. The beach is open during the summer season, with lifeguards on duty, making it an ideal family-friendly getaway.
Spanning 2,230 acres with 29 miles of shoreline, Castaic Lake is the centerpiece of the Castaic Lake State Recreation Area. The reservoir is divided into two distinct areas:
🌊 Upper Lake: it’s the larger and more adventurous side, attracting visitors for activities like power boating, water skiing, sailing, and fishing.
🌊 Lower Lake (or “the Lagoon”): it offers calmer waters that are better suited for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and other non-motorized activities.
The reservoir also features picnic areas, hiking and biking trails, and fishing.
The largest floating playground in the region
For visitors looking to add some adrenaline to their lake day, Castaic Lake is also home to Cali Splash Park, Southern California’s largest floating inflatable water park. The attraction features more than 45 obstacles, including slides, climbing structures, balance bridges, trampolines, and floating platforms spread across the water.
Unlike the free swim beach, Cali Splash Park requires a ticket, but it turns a simple day at the lake into a full obstacle course adventure.
How to get to Castaic Lake from Los Angeles
The easiest way to reach Castaic Lake is by car. Simply take I-5 north toward Santa Clarita and exit for Castaic Lake Drive. The drive typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.
