In SoCal, where getting across town can already feel like a small expedition, staying on top of road closures is essential, especially when a major canyon route is involved. If you’re planning to use Topanga Canyon Boulevard this Friday night, you’ll want to know about a significant closure before you hit the road.
When is Topanga Canyon Boulevard closing?
Caltrans will fully close Topanga Canyon Boulevard/State Route 27 between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive from 11:59 p.m. Friday, August 28, until 8 a.m. Saturday, August 29. The closure is needed while crews continue installing an 84-inch reinforced concrete pipe beneath the highway as part of ongoing recovery work following the 2025 Palisades Fire and winter storms.
There will also be an earlier restriction on Friday night. From 9 p.m. to 11:59 p.m., SR-27 will be reduced to one lane near mile marker 2.5, with flaggers alternating traffic in both directions. Drivers should expect delays before the full closure begins.
Once the closure is in effect, drivers will need to use a lengthy detour:
- Southbound SR-27: Take U.S. 101 to southbound I-405, then westbound I-10 to northbound PCH.
- Northbound SR-27: Take southbound PCH to eastbound I-10, then northbound I-405 to westbound U.S. 101.
The highway will remain open north of Grand View Drive toward U.S. 101, so drivers traveling between Grand View Drive and the 101 will not be affected by the full closure. Drivers can check Caltrans QuickMap before leaving for current traffic conditions and closures.
What is the $2.75M project fixing?
The 84-inch reinforced concrete pipe project costs about $2.75 million and is designed to carry stormwater, mud and debris during rainstorms. The additional drainage capacity is intended to reduce the risk of debris overflowing onto the highway and causing embankment failures during future storms.
The pipe installation is the last major piece of ongoing recovery work on SR-27 following the Palisades Fire and winter storms. Caltrans expects the pipe work to be completed by fall 2026, with most recovery work on the highway wrapping up by the end of the year.
