Los Angeles Metro’s new D Line Subway Extension is highly anticipated for travelers, who are looking forward to traveling across 9 new miles of rail in 25 minutes from Downtown L.A. to Westwood.
While previous reports had hinted at an opening date before March, Metro announced yesterday that Phase 1 from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega will officially open on May 8th, 2026.
Here’s a closer look…
Phase 1 to Wilshire/La Cienega
The D Line Subway Extension is being constructed in three phases with three different estimated opening dates.
Phase 1 comprises the Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega stations, with a grand opening scheduled for May 8th, 2026. Metro announced the opening along with a limited release of “Ride the D” T-shirts costing $21.
A February 11th community meeting presentation provided some updates about the latest work on the D Line extension, pending design and City of Beverly Hills approval. Projects include center-lane work and curb and gutter restoration at Wilshire around the La Cienega station, and median restoration at Wilshire and San Vicente.
Once Phase 1 stations open, travelers will have a new way to travel 3.92 miles through mid-Wilshire, starting at Western Avenue.
2027 opening dates for Phases 2 and 3

Of course, the full D Line extension will reach 9 miles all the way to Westwood. While L.A. Metro has not indicated specific dates for the rest of the opening, they have shared general projected opening times.
Section 2 consists of the Beverly Drive and Century City stations, which are due to open in the spring of 2027.
Then, we’ll have to wait until the fall of 2027 for Section 3, which includes the Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital stations.
