Next year, San Pedro gets a lot more interesting. West Harbor, the $500 million, 42-acre waterfront district currently opening in phases at the Los Angeles Waterfront in San Pedro, is set to debut the West Harbor Wheel in 2027. Standing 175 feet tall, it will be the tallest Ferris wheel in the state of California — dwarfing the 100-foot Pacific Wheel at Santa Monica Pier by 75 feet.
The wheel will be surrounded by a full carnival zone, with Venetian-style seaside carouse and other rides and attractions in the same area.
What you’ll see from the top of California’s tallest Ferris wheel
The gondolas will be fully enclosed, meaning you can ride in comfort year-round. From 175 feet up, the views will take in:
- The Pacific Ocean and the open harbor
- The USS Iowa battleship museum, docked directly below
- The Vincent Thomas Bridge, one of the most dramatic spans in SoCal
- Passing cruise ships and working cargo vessels from the Port of L.A.
The wheel is part of a larger outdoor amusement area that includes a seaside carousel, an open-air amphitheater, and various restaurants. No other Ferris wheel in California offers a view like this. It will face the port — which means ships, bridges, a battleship, and the full sweep of the L.A. coastline.
The bigger picture at West Harbor
The West Harbor Wheel and the recreational zone are targeted for completion by 2027. No official opening date has been announced yet — but when it drops, expect lines. However, you don’t have to wait for the grand opening to already catch some action at the port!

- Dine at the San Pedro Fish Market: Grab a bite at the popular waterfront location that remains open daily during the ongoing construction.
- Take a Harbor Cruise: Hop on Harbor Breeze Cruises for a scenic boat tour or whale watching.
- Explore the Promenade: Enjoy the expansive, mile-long shoreline and outdoor paths.
- Rent a Surrey Bike: Visit Wheel Fun Rentals to pedal around the waterfront area on four-wheelers.
West Harbor is also hosting an official FIFA World Cup 26 Fan Zone on July, meaning the district will be buzzing long before the grand opening.
