Heavy gray walls and exposed industrial ceilings create an atmosphere closer to a modern art gallery than a traditional Los Angeles bakery. Inside this raw, minimalist space, the focus narrows entirely to a highly curated selection of baked goods.
That’s exactly the point. Monolith Coffee, one of Alhambra’s latest openings, leans into a distinctly Japanese-inspired coffee culture with a subtle speakeasy edge, all wrapped in a striking brutalist setting that’s hard to ignore.
The shop was founded by Nikki Jin and Eli Wang, a Pratt Institute MFA graduate, and operates with an almost obsessive attention to detail: beans are roasted in-house, syrups are made from scratch, and every signature drink comes with a tasting card breaking down its composition.
Instead of a standard menu, Monolith offers “In Four Movements,” a rotating seasonal lineup of drinks that shifts every few months, weaving together citrus, tea, espresso, and even savory notes.
On the pastry side, Jin handles the baking herself, turning out items like hojicha chestnut financiers, miso nori scones, and matcha yuzu pound cake, each one feeling less like a grab-and-go snack and more like part of the overall experience.
