From May through November, these waters become one of the best places on Earth to spot the magnificent blue whale, the largest animal on the planet. Depending on the day, sightings can also include humpback whales, fin whales, dolphins, and even sea lions.
Their whale-watching trips typically last around 2 to 2.5 hours, giving plenty of time to head offshore into deeper waters where marine life thrives. Blue whales, the world’s largest animal
The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to exist on Earth, reaching 80–100 feet in length. But despite its impressive larger-than-life size, it survives on one of the smallest food sources in the ocean: krill, tiny shrimp-like organisms it filters in enormous gulps of seawater.
For these mammals, California waters are a critical feeding zone. Between May and November, blue whales migrate to the nutrient-rich Pacific off the coast to gorge on seasonal krill blooms fueled by coastal upwelling.
Here they can be seen surfacing, lunging, and diving in long, deep cycles as they build the energy reserves needed for reproduction later in warmer waters farther south.
