Most modern hotels praise themselves for their decor, usually composed of a soothing color palette, uniform tones, and nothing that stands out too much… identical rooms and rather flat styles. And that’s fine, we’re not judging. This place, however, couldn’t be further from these current minimalist concepts…
Its style, over-the-top and full of colorful details, makes it a true local and national legend, so much so that it’s considered by National Geographic to be the best retro motel in the entire state. And it’s easy to see why.
The dazzling history and decór of a maximalist icon
The Madonna Inn opened its doors on December 24, 1958, in San Luis Obispo, about three hours from L.A., with just 12 rooms. Founded by construction magnate Alex Madonna and his wife, Phyllis, the inn quickly expanded to 40 rooms by the end of 1959.
This larger-than-life motel is a riot of color, texture, and whimsy. The barbie-pink color dominates the palette, while floral shagpile carpets, Disney-esque turrets, fuchsia tennis courts, and glimmering gold chandeliers create an atmosphere that feels more like a theatrical set than a hotel.
Every corner reflects the bold celebration of Americana and playful opulence. Inside, no two rooms are alike among the 110 themed spaces. The Yahoo Room perches its bed atop a wagon, the Caveman Room immerses guests in rock walls and decorative clubs, and the Matterhorn Room captures the Swiss Alps in stained-glass with a vintage cowbell for effect.
By night, rum punch cocktails glide across the bar toward devoted long-time guests and curious newcomers discovering the inn online. The adjacent steakhouse continues the spectacle, offering filet mignon and lobster in circular pink booths beneath gilded cherubs, making every visit a truly unforgettable experience.
