Manhattan Beach is closing several downtown streets and parking lots this November for its annual Pier Lighting and Holiday Open House, a festive evening that officially kicks off the holiday season in the South Bay. The free event takes place on Wednesday, November 18, bringing live music, holiday entertainment, and the lighting of the Manhattan Beach Pier.
According to the City of Manhattan Beach, the main celebration runs from 6 to 9 p.m., although some activities begin earlier.
Manhattan Beach street closures

The following roads and parking areas will be closed, according to the city’s event information:
- Manhattan Beach Boulevard, from Highland Avenue to Ocean Drive: 3–10 p.m.
- Manhattan Beach Boulevard, from Ocean Drive to the pier: 2–10 p.m.
- Manhattan Avenue, between 12th Street and 9th Street: 3–10 p.m.
- Lower Pier parking lots: 2–10 p.m.
- Upper Pier parking lots: 3–10 p.m.
If you’re planning to visit downtown, consider arriving before the closures begin or parking farther away and walking to the festivities.
What to expect at the Manhattan Beach Pier Lighting ceremony
The highlight of the evening is the lighting of the pier at 7 p.m., preceded by performances from local school choirs. The Manhattan Beach Middle School Choir kicks off the program at 6 p.m., followed by the Mira Costa High School Choir at 6:30 p.m.
Beyond the pier, the celebration spreads throughout downtown, with holiday music, festive street decorations, and entertainment for the whole family. At Metlox Plaza, you can find Santa’s sleigh and family photo opportunities, face painting, balloon twisting, hot chocolate, and cookies.
Strolling carolers will fill the streets with holiday songs, while live music and performances take place along Highland Avenue and Manhattan Avenue. There’s even a chance to see live reindeer near 9th Street and Manhattan Avenue.
Local shops and restaurants will remain open until 9 p.m., making it a good opportunity to browse for holiday gifts, grab a bite, and support neighborhood businesses.
The event is free to attend and also includes the annual Beach Cities Toy Drive. Attendees can bring new, unwrapped toys to donate to children served by local charities.
