Today’s the day! Phase 1 of the LA Metro’s long-awaited D-Line is finally opening for public use at 12:30 pm.
In celebration of the opening, you can catch the Metro bus, rail, bike share, and Micro fro free all weekend long.
The three new stops are located at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega. The new stations include:
- Massive murals and art installations
- Open-air concepts with bright lighting for optimal safety
- New bike lockers
- Access to more bus stops and transfers
The opening is 18 years in the making, with LA Metro calling it “an extremely historic moment.”
“Wilshire Boulevard is one of our region’s most iconic streets,” reads their report. “But there has never been any kind of rail service on Wilshire west of Western Avenue, the current terminus for the D Line. “
The plan for the station first began back in 2008, after Los Angeles County approved the Measure R sales tax measure that funded a nine-mile extension of the subway to Westwood. Construction was accelerated following the passing of a 2016 sales tax ballot measure.
This is just the beginning, as two more phases of the D-Line are scheduled to open in the coming years. Beverly Drive and Century City stations are scheduled to open in the spring of 2027, while the final Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital stations are scheduled for the fall.
