We’re no strangers to vast and diverse landscapes: deserts, beaches, forests, plains, and swamps stretch for miles across the U.S. But some of the most breathtaking scenery comes from the great and imposing mountain ranges.
One of these peaks, the tallest in the U.S. (not counting Alaska, of course), is located just a short drive from the city. Hidden along its slopes is a pristine alpine lake that rewards adventurous hikers with stunning views.
Mount Whitney stands at 14,505 feet above sea level, making it the highest point in the 48 continental and contiguous states. Located in the Sierra Nevada, it sits right on the border between Sequoia National Park and Inyo National Forest. Because of its beauty and size, it’s both an icon and a challenge for hikers; thousands of people attempt the climb every summer.
Hiking Mount Whitney is a serious-but-worthy adventure. The most popular route is the Mount Whitney Trail, about 13 miles from Lone Pine. The round trip covers roughly 22 miles, with an elevation gain of over 6,100 feet. Since the trail is heavily used, a permit is required year-round, especially during the busy season from May to November. Permits are distributed through a lottery system on Recreation.gov, so planning ahead is essential.
But if you’re not ready for the full summit hike, don’t worry. According to expert hiking site Hiking Guy, the Lone Pine Lake trail is a manageable alternative that still gives you a taste of the mountain. Starting at Whitney Portal, the trail begins near the restrooms and general store, passing a wooden structure with trail info and a backpack scale. Early on, you’ll cross a tricky boulder field and then steadily climb with views of Lone Pine and Owens Valley below.

After entering the John Muir Wilderness, the trail ascends gradually with switchbacks and stone steps. You might spot a waterfall feeding Lone Pine Lake before crossing Lone Pine Creek on rustic log bridges, where trout are often visible. At the junction, turn left to reach Lone Pine Lake, a peaceful spot with a beach area surrounded by granite peaks.
It’s definitely a perfect weekend getaway plan if you’re looking for a bit of an adventure in the great outdoors, mixed with a trekking workout with a refreshing prize at the end!
