West Hollywood is about to mark a powerful and historic moment. On Sunday, November 16, the city will officially open STORIES: The AIDS Monument, a permanent memorial dedicated to honoring those lost to AIDS and celebrating the resilience, activism, and compassion that emerged from the epidemic.
A Monument Years in the Making
Presented by the Foundation for the AIDS Monument (FAM) in partnership with the City of West Hollywood, this emotional event represents years of collaboration between artists, advocates, and community members. The Monument is located in West Hollywood Park and features interactive storytelling installations that honor the past, educate the present, and inspire ongoing action in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
“Tens of thousands of Americans are infected with HIV each year, and many still die of AIDS. Stigma against those with HIV persists,” reads a statement by Foundation for the AIDS Monument (FAM). “Income inequality and the lack of equal access to health care remain the greatest obstacles to life-saving treatment for the most vulnerable Americans. This Monument reminds us to never forget our history and inspires us to continue to fight for equal access to quality health care, for expanded civil rights, and for a cure.”
What To Expect
The grand opening ceremony is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to attend. Guests are encouraged to dress “classy but comfortable,” as the event will be held outdoors.
The public unveiling will take place from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in the outdoor courtyard of the Pacific Design Center. Seating begins at 3 p.m., and attendees will be invited to walk through the monument following the ceremony. Plus, there’s an after-party at The Abbey Food & Bar from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m.
