For over 94 years, the Pacific Dining Car has been serving steaks with a side of sophistication.
Back in the mid-20s, the restaurant quickly became a neighborhood favorite because of its 65 cent sirloin steaks and $1.50 filet mignons. Besides a minimal remodel in the 1970s, the Dining Car has managed to maintain a classic elegance complemented by intimate booths, muted greens and red decor, accents of wood, and shiny brass.
Dining at the Pacific Dining Car is definitely a throwback experience. Yes, its location sits smack dab in the middle of a gas station, U-Haul rental, and the Good Samaritan Hospital – but as soon as you step foot inside the restaurant and follow your maître d to a table, you immediately feel like you’ve transported into an old-timey LA movie.
As a gold standard, the 24-hour establishment welcomes anyone, on any day (including Christmas), in any state of sobriety! Whether it’s 4 p.m. or 3 a.m. guests can expect outstanding service, cocktails poured in crystal and well-prepared food that will have you forgetting about all those preservatives you had for lunch.
Though the menu doesn’t fall short of $60-$80 steaks, you can find something less pricey on the post-11 p.m. menu. For starters, the Baseball Steak (which was made famous by the movie ‘Training Day’) is half the amount it usually is during normal business hours selling at an acceptable $20.95! Rumor has it that the restaurant will prepare you anything you ask for if they’re able… so go ahead and ask for those deviled eggs!
