Imagine spending the day somewhere you can truly do it all: soak up the sun, hike along dramatic cliffs, spot wildlife, take in jaw-dropping ocean views, and even explore a kelp forest beneath the waves.
Sounds like a dream, right? That’s exactly what this natural reserve is all about.
Just under three hours north of L.A., this coastal gem near Carmel-by-the-Sea, Point Lobos feels like it belongs in a nature documentary. It’s peaceful, wild, and absolutely stunning; no wonder it’s often called the crown jewel of California’s state parks.
From the moment you step onto a trail, you’ll want to slow down, breathe in the salty air, and take it all in. Think dramatic cliffs, quiet coves, windswept trees, and trails that hug the Pacific. It’s the perfect escape when you’re craving nature and space to unwind.

The trails here are super easy to follow, which makes them great for beginners, casual hikers, and families. One local favorite is Sea Lion Point Trail, where you’ll likely hear sea lions barking before you even see them. Another must-do is the North Shore Trail, which winds through forested bluffs and opens up to postcard-worthy views of the ocean.
But the best part is that you don’t have to settle for just admiring the ocean, you can dive right in and explore it properly with an epic scuba session. The underwater wonders are made of massive kelp forests, reefs, and all kinds of marine life. Whalers Cove is a favorite spot for diving, but you’ll need a reservation to get in.
And that’s not it… This spot is also a dream come true for wildlife lovers. In the summer months, you’ve got a solid chance of spotting sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, and plenty of birds. If you’re really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a humpback or blue whale out in the distance. So don’t forget your camera and binoculars!
Now, before planning your trip, just a quick heads-up: swimming isn’t allowed here, and neither are pets, drones, or bikes. This place is carefully protected, and they work hard to keep it that way. Also, parking fills up fast (especially on weekends), so your best bet is to arrive early and make a day of it.
