Stepping into California’s ancient forests feels like entering another world. The tall trees, sunlight shining through the leaves, and the quiet rustle of the forest invite you to slow down and relax. There’s a special kind of peace here that no ordinary hike or drive can offer, an immersive escape where every moment feels fresh, calm, and truly refreshing.
And to make the most of it, a ride through one of the most lush and vibrant forest areas in the state is the perfect plan any time of year. But especially in the fall, it’s the best way to soak in the changing colors of the leaves, surrounded by the calm and beauty of nature.
A journey through majestic trees
At Roaring Camp Railroads, you can ride a historic 1912 steam train through some of the state’s most beautiful redwood forests. The railroad was started in 1963 by F. Norman Clark to keep the history of steam trains alive and to give people a fun way to see the redwoods.
From the moment the train leaves the station, you’ll be surrounded by giant trees, mossy branches, and the peaceful sounds of the forest. The ride goes up Bear Mountain, crossing wooden bridges and following narrow tracks for 3.25 miles.
Along the way, it’s easy to imagine how the train used to carry huge logs from the forest back in the day! With every turn, the beauty of the redwoods opens up around you, giving you a chance to step back in time and see California’s forests and history in a way that no hike or drive can match.
Special events and seasonal rides
Roaring Camp offers a variety of special events throughout the year that add extra fun to your visit. One popular event is Thomas & Percy’s Halloween Party, where kids can enjoy a 25-minute train ride with Thomas the Tank Engine, meet Sir Topham Hatt, and participate in themed activities like pumpkin picking and crafts. This event runs on select weekends in October.
During Christmas season, the Holiday Lights Train, the cars are beautifully decorated with thousands of colorful lights as they roll through the streets of Santa Cruz. Passengers can enjoy festive music, sip hot cider, and even have a visit from Santa. It’s a magical experience for all ages.
Visiting Roaring Camp
The train ride is wheelchair accessible and dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your furry friend along. However, it’s a good idea to bring your own snacks, as food options on-site can be limited.
The ride offers both open and covered cars. While open cars provide a more immersive experience with unobstructed views of the towering redwoods, they can be noisy, so consider ear protection if you’re going with young children.
