Countless Angelenos love to visit Silverwood Lake each summer, which is nestled high in the San Bernardino Mountains about 90 minutes from the city. The striking, bright blue reservoir is known for its clear waters, spectacular mountain views, and great recreational opportunities. The summer swim season is in full swing, offering sunny lake beach days through September. Whether you’re looking to rent a campsite or plan a day trip, here’s what to know before you visit Silverwood Lake.
Swim season at Silverwood Lake
Silverwood Lake’s summer swim season typically runs from April 1st through September 30th, with daily access available from 6am to 9pm. The lake’s two designated swim beaches, Sawpit Beach and Cleghorn Beach, are marked with swim buoys and manned by lifeguards during the summer. These areas are equipped with bathrooms, picnic facilities, and parking lots. The parking lots can fill up quickly, so it’s worth getting there as early as possible.
As is the case with many of California’s lakes, Silverwood Lake can sometimes be prone to algae blooms, especially in warm weather. Advisories are posted at the beaches and online based on routine tests. Visitors should always check current conditions before arriving to make sure the lake is safe to swim in.
Inflatable pool toys and rafts are not permitted in the swim area, and dogs are not permitted on the beaches or in the water. There are some boat rentals available in the marina—more on that below.
Other amenities and attractions at Silverwood Lake
Beyond swimming, the Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area offers numerous activities to make the most of the park.
