“The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops” just released its first-ever ranking of coffee titans, ultimately naming fourteen U.S. coffee shops among the top 100. It turns out we have coffee royalty right here in our midst because Stumptown was named #52 in the world. The coffee chain, which is originally from Portland, has expanded throughout the U.S. and gained fame for its innovations in the realm of cold brew. We’re lucky to enjoy Stumptown Coffee Roasters in Pasadena on Lincoln Ave, so what’s stopping you from going to try it for yourself?
Ranking the world’s best coffee shops
Neodrinks presented the comprehensive ranking of coffee shops on February 17, 2025 after a rigorous one-year voting and evaluation process. They reviewed over 4,000 businesses, ranking them on a system with 70% of professional panel votes and 30% of popular votes. The panel comprised experts from all over the world, and the popular vote received 65,000+ votes over 15 days.
The world’s #1 coffee shop turned out to be Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters, which is based in Chippendale, New South Wales, Australia. Second place went to ONYX Coffee Co., which operates out of Northwest Arkansas.

More about Stumptown
Stumptown Coffee Roasters ranked at #52 on the final list of the world’s best coffee shops, and #14 out of all the U.S. cafes listed.
Even though Stumptown opened its first Portland coffee shop way back in 1999, its Pasadena location opened just a year ago in February 2024. The luminous, casual cafe has an inside/outside design with a big roll-up door that stays up during opening hours. Customers are invited to order a classic espresso drink, cold brew, or a hot breakfast sandwich and take a seat by the colorful art wall.
While you’ll find a great menu of coffee drinks at Stumptown, the roastery is especially famous for its cold brew. You might recognize their ready-to-drink cold brew cartons, which come in flavors like horchata and chocolate, but they also offer some comprehensive cold brew guides so you can make your own right at home.
Stumptown currently operates five successful outposts in Portland, three in New York, one here in L.A., and one in Kyoto, Japan. The coffee roastery was purchased by Peet’s Coffee back in 2015, and earned a B-Corp certification for its sustainable business model in 2018.
