Los Angeles County officials may adopt an ordinance being coined as the “Transplant Tax” this November 2024 — that will charge individuals who plan to move to within the county and city. But there’s a catch as to who exactly this targets.
Under the ordinance, if an out-of-state content creator plans to move to Los Angeles, they must prove their contribution to the county — meaning if you are an upcoming TikToker looking to relocate to Tinseltown, you may be out of luck.
According to the proposed law, you must show proof of how your online content contributes to the well-being of the county, city, and locals. Many from all walks of life took to online forums like Reddit to both praise and rip apart the proposed ordinance.
“It’s not my fault my ASMR readings go viral and now I’m an influencer,” commented up-and-coming Astrologer ASMR TikToker and “GRWM” Fashionista SeanThaStar420. “But now I’m being charged to chase a bag in L.A.?! Ugh, everyone is sooo fake. Hopefully, they take free PR packages as compensation.”
Meanwhile, others felt the opposite, hoping this tax charge would put an end to certain behaviors.
“Look, I love doom scrolling on my phone as much as the next guy. My only hope for this is that fewer influencers who have never stepped out of 5,000 feet of their luxury apartment in WeHo, stop sticking their cameras in my face asking me what I do for a living, what song I’m listening to, and if they can go through my girlfriend’s phone,” commented one born and raised L.A. local. “Oh, and less millennial grey coffee shops and more affordable housing.”
