Sushi lovers might not need to break the bank to have their own omakase experience!
Uchi, a sushi restaurant, opened its first location on the West Coast in West Hollywood in 2023 – and its menu currently offers a budget-friendly somakase alongside its Chef Tasting options.
What is Uchi?
Uchi began in Austin, Texas back in 2003 under James Beard Award‑winning Chef and Owner Tyson Cole. Cole trained under two sushi masters in Tokyo, New York, and Austin for ten years. According to Uchi’s website, Cole brings “his path of study and experimentation each day at the restaurants in the Uchi family.”
What’s on the menu?
Omakase is a Japanese word that describes trusting a chef to curate a multi-course meal with fresh ingredients, but typical omakase experiences in the States range between $250 and $500.
With Uchi’s somakase option, guests’ server can curate a tasting menu based on their preferences, tastes, dietary restrictions, and, most importantly, their preferred price point.
Uchi’s menu is printed daily, reflecting fresh catches and seasonal ingredients.
Some of our favorites include:
- wagyu flat iron: white asparagus, rhubarb, green garlic
- muki hotate:
- hazelnut prawns: coconut, orange blossom honey, chives
- hama chili: yellowtail, ponzu, thai chili, orange supreme
- mikandai: japanese citrus snapper
Uchi’s other chef tasting options include a ten-course chef’s tasting for two for $350, a signature eight-course tasting menu with restaurant favorites for $120, and a ten-course vegetarian menu for $120. They’re typically for two people.
The restaurant is also celebrating National Caviar Day through the end of July with a caviar dessert, Ice Cream and Pearls, which layers Moscatel ice cream with funnel cake, white chocolate pearls, and a quarter ounce of Kaluga caviar.
