If you commute between the San Fernando Valley and the Westside, you’ll need to plan ahead this May. Caltrans has announced the next phase of extended weekend lane reductions and nightly closures along Northbound Interstate 405 (I-405).
These disruptions are part of the ongoing $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, a massive infrastructure overhaul aimed at extending the pavement’s lifespan and improving safety along a 10.2-mile stretch between Van Nuys and Westwood. While Southbound I-405 will largely remain open during the weekends, the Northbound side will face significant bottlenecks.
Here is everything you need to know to navigate the Sepulveda Pass this month.
Weekend One: May 1 – May 4

When: 10:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, May 4.
- Lane Reductions: The Northbound I-405 will be restricted to three open lanes between Skirball Center Drive and Ventura Boulevard.
- Ramp Closures: The Skirball Center Drive on-ramp to Northbound I-405 and the Northbound I-405 off-ramp to Getty Center Drive will be entirely closed.
- Official Detour: To bypass the disruption, travel north on Sepulveda Boulevard as your primary surface street alternative. You can re-enter the Northbound I-405 using the Greenleaf/Ventura Blvd. on-ramp.
Weekend Two: May 15 – May 18

When: 10:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, May 18.
- Lane Reductions: The Northbound I-405 will be squeezed down to just two lanes between Burbank Boulevard and Victory Boulevard.
- Interchange Closures: Both the Northbound and Southbound U.S. 101 connectors directing traffic to Northbound I-405 will be shut down.
- Ramp Closures: The Northbound I-405 off-ramp to Victory Boulevard, the on- and off-ramps at Burbank Boulevard, and the off-ramp to Getty Center Drive will all be completely closed.
U.S. 101 Detour Routes for May 15–18:
- Traveling from Northbound U.S. 101 to Northbound I-405: Exit at the Sepulveda Boulevard off-ramp and head north on Sepulveda. Next, turn west onto Victory Boulevard and proceed to the Northbound I-405 on-ramp.
- Traveling from Southbound U.S. 101 to Northbound I-405: Drive southbound on the I-405 and take the Ventura Boulevard exit. Head east on Ventura Boulevard, turn south onto Dickens Street, and then turn south onto Sepulveda Boulevard to reach the Northbound I-405 on-ramp.
What Else to Expect

Caltrans notes there will be roughly 25 of these extended weekend operations before the project is fully completed. Residents and business owners near the construction zones should anticipate increased noise, vibrations, and dust during working hours.
Because construction schedules are notoriously at the mercy of the weather and operational logistics, these dates and times are subject to shift. Before you get behind the wheel, always check the Caltrans Quickmap app or website for real-time road conditions and live traffic updates to ensure a smooth trip.
