Sometimes the best weekend plans don’t require a plane ticket — just a tank of gas and a reason to head south. About two hours from Los Angeles, one of San Diego’s most eclectic neighborhoods will trade its usual traffic for 10 blocks of live music, carnival rides, food, drinks, local makers and thousands of visitors. For an entire weekend, Adams Avenue becomes a giant pedestrian playground where you can wander between stages, stop for a bite, shop local stalls and discover a new favorite band along the way.
And despite the sheer size of it all, you don’t need a ticket to get in.
The Adams Avenue Street Fair is back
The 44th annual Adams Avenue Street Fair returns to Normal Heights on September 19 and 20, bringing one of San Diego’s biggest free neighborhood celebrations back to the avenue. This year’s festival will feature 75 musical acts across six stages and more than 300 vendors and exhibitors. The result is less like a traditional street fair and more like a giant outdoor party spread across several blocks.
Six stages mean there’s always something playing
Music is the heart of the weekend, with performances spanning rock, blues, Latin, funk, roots, world music and more. This year’s lineup includes Masta Ace, Chris Duarte Group, Los Fabulocos, Boostive, Euphoria Brass Band and Sue Palmer & Her Motel Swing Orchestra, among dozens of other acts. With six stages operating throughout the festival, there’s plenty of room to wander rather than plant yourself in one spot.
Between performances, visitors can browse 300+ vendors, grab festival food, visit one of the beer gardens or jump on carnival rides. There’s even a performance component from Fern Street Circus, adding another bit of spectacle to an already packed weekend. The scale is impressive, the street fair drew more than 50,000 visitors, turning the Normal Heights corridor into one of San Diego’s busiest weekend destinations.
