Big Bear’s newest eaglets officially have a name!
Jackie and Shadow’s latest batch of offspring hatched over Easter weekend and Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that manages the livestream cameras that give the world access to the avian celebrities from the California lake, opened up the naming to their fans and followers.
The nonprofit received nearly 64,000 name submissions for the two birds. Local third-graders then voted on their favorites and selected…
Luna and Sandy!
Sandy is actually a nod to Sandy Steers, the former nonprofit executive director who helped chronicle the lives of the eagles and died in February 2026. The name received 3,706 of the total 63,915 submissions, making it the most popular moniker entered.
“Please know that although Sandy would not have wanted us to outright name one of the eaglets Sandy, she would have been honored that you and the students went through the process and named one of the 2026 eaglets after her,” reads the nonprofit’s official name announcement.
Sandy received 30 student votes, while Luna received 25.
