When summer arrives in California, many travelers instinctively head toward the coast. But for those looking for cooler temperatures, alpine views, and crisp air, June Lake (the Golden State’s version of Switzerland) has always been one of the most rewarding escapes we have.
Now, one of the area’s longtime camping destinations is back. Pine Cliff Campground (formerly known as Pine Cliff Resort) officially reopened after a roughly three-year closure, giving visitors a new place to stay while exploring the Eastern Sierra.
Located along the iconic June Lake Loop, the campground reopened in July 2026 after a period of operational changes and permitting work. The 13-acre property sits just steps from June Lake Beach, surrounded by towering Jeffrey pines and dramatic Sierra Nevada peaks.
What’s new at the reopened Pine Cliff Campground?
The campground is back with a mix of restored services and updated camping options, featuring the staggering amount of more than 150 campsites. While some amenities are still returning gradually, visitors can already plan a stay with these features:
- ⛺ Three camping options: Guests can choose between dry camping sites, water-only sites, and RV sites with water and sewer hookups.
- 🚿 Restored campground amenities: The property now offers shower facilities, restrooms, laundry services, and a general store for camping essentials and supplies.
- 🏕️ A classic lakeside camping setting: Pine Cliff provides easy access to June Lake Beach and the surrounding outdoor activities, making it a convenient base for fishing, paddling, hiking, and exploring the June Lake Loop.
- 🔥 Updated fire rules: Traditional wood-burning fire pits are not available this season. Visitors may only use portable propane fire pits while staying at the campground.
For campers planning their visit, one thing to consider is that electrical hookups are not currently available, so RV travelers should plan accordingly and bring alternative power options if needed.
June Lake, California’s ‘Little Switzerland’
With its crystal-clear waters, pine forests, and dramatic mountain backdrop, June Lake has earned a nickname that feels fitting: California’s Little Switzerland.
The valley sits beneath the towering 10,909-foot Carson Peak, creating a landscape filled with glacier-carved lakes, granite peaks, and classic High Sierra scenery. During summer, the June Lake Loop becomes one of California’s most scenic mountain drives, connecting four stunning lakes: June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake, and Grant Lake.
Visitors can spend their days swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or simply relaxing by the shoreline. Nearby trails, including Parker Lake Trail, offer even more ways to explore the surrounding wilderness, while scenic overlooks along the loop deliver some of the best views in the Eastern Sierra.
