L.A. County’s Overnight Family Camping series is coming to an end this month, but there’s still time to sign up for a few more weeks of events!
August’s theme is “Stargazing and Space Exploration,” meaning telescopes will be available for attendees to gaze up at the night sky and sleep under the stars without ever having to leave greater Los Angeles.
Each overnight event is a one-night, Friday-to-Saturday “staycation” designed for families and first-time campers. You check in Friday evening, pitch your tent, join guided activities after dark, and then wake up on Saturday with the option to linger at the park the rest of the day.

Here’s the rest of the August lineup, all built around the “Stargazing and Space Exploration” theme.
It’s a good opportunity to get to know places like Castaic Lake, the largest reservoir in L.A. County; and Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, which has a popular sandy swim beach.

- Friday, Aug. 14: Castaic Lake Recreation Area
- Friday, Aug. 14: Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park
- Friday, Aug 21: Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area
- Friday, Aug. 28: Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area
Amenities and facilities vary by campground. Some sites also include special activities; for example, Santa Fe Dam’s event has a live DJ, Kenneth Hahn SRA’s event includes a free raffle, and Castaic Lake has a campfire with s’mores.
🎟️ Admission: General admission costs $15. Kids 13 and under can join for free. First-come, first-served.
🕜 Schedule: Each event starts at 6:00 pm, with doors closing at 10:00 pm. Participants are welcome to stay as long as they like for the remainder of the day on Saturday.
⛺ Gear: Attendees must bring their own tent, sleeping bags, flashlights, water, food, and gear.
