SoCal is getting ready for a wave of major upgrades as the region prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games. From transit lines to public spaces and waterfront areas, many projects are underway to improve how people live and move.
One of the latest updates comes from Long Beach, where work has started on a large renovation at the city’s airport. The project focuses on upgrading the boarding area to create a more modern and comfortable travel experience ahead of the Olympics, while also improving long-term operations.
Long Beach Airport overhaul

The renovation began just two weeks ago and comes with a total budget of $37 million. Part of the funding (more than $24 million), is being covered by a federal grant. The project includes upgrades across all 11 gate areas, along with restrooms and a new space for service animals.
Seating will be replaced with more comfortable options that include charging stations. The central garden area, a key feature of the airport, will also be improved with more seating, shade structures, lighting, and a better announcement system.
Two new open-air garden spaces will be added to the north and south sides of the concourse. Travelers will also notice clearer signage and improved flight information displays.
Behind the scenes, the airport will install a backup generator and upgrade its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Energy-efficient lighting will be added as part of the sustainability plan.
Construction is expected to finish by summer 2027.
