Right now, all the attention is on the Fourth of July — but Angelenos looking for another reason to celebrate won’t have to wait long. On July 14, Los Angeles is hosting a free, open-air celebration in the heart of Downtown for Bastille Day. For the second year in a row, the Consulate General of France in Los Angeles is partnering with Grand Performances to bring the event to California Plaza, open to the public and free to attend.
What is Bastille Day?
Bastille Day, known in France as La Fête Nationale, commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, a pivotal moment in the French Revolution that came to symbolize the end of monarchy and the birth of the French Republic. It’s celebrated annually in France and by French communities around the world with parades, fireworks, and public gatherings. Los Angeles’ own French community and consulate is building a growing local tradition around it.
What to do at Bastille Day Los Angeles
The celebration runs from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM at California Plaza. The evening includes a free open-air concert featuring performances from Black M, Barbara Pravi, Joachim Garraud, and Pascal & the French Jazz Project — a lineup spanning French hip-hop, chanson, electronic music, and jazz. Alongside the music, a French market will be set up on-site with authentic food and goods, and there will be activities for the whole family throughout the evening.
