The future of California surfing might be heading inland — deep into the heart of the desert!
In a move that sounds like science fiction but is fast becoming reality, DSRT Surf will soon open its massive, high-tech surf resort in Palm Desert. Set to launch in Summer 2026, this sprawling complex promises to turn the arid Coachella Valley into a world-class surfing destination, capable of pumping out a staggering 1,000 waves per hour.
The technology behind the waves
Combining Wavegarden technology with high-end resort luxury, this 17-acre destination is set to become a global magnet for surf enthusiasts. The system is revolutionary for its ability to provide a consistent, high-quality surfing experience regardless of the conditions.
- Waves Every 8 Seconds: The lagoon can produce up to 1,000 waves per hour.
- Something for Everyone: With 30 different wave types, the lagoon is split into zones. Beginners can practice on knee-high rollers while experts can tuck into heavy, spitting barrels.
- Social Surfing: The facility can host 60 to 80 surfers at once!
We know that sustainability is often a concern regarding these projects. However, DSRT Surf’s “Turf for Surf” initiative transformed 30 acres of neighboring golf course lawn into drought-resistant and native plantings. The conversion is projected to conserve 34.8 million gallons of water per year — surpassing the surf pool’s own estimated annual consumption of 23.8 million gallons — and yielding a net water savings of 11 million gallons annually.
More than just surfing
Besides the surf pool, the resort will also feature the following:
- Luxury accommodations: A 92-room boutique hotel and over 50 private villas for those looking for an extended stay.
- The Surf Center: A social hub featuring a surf academy, gear rentals, and high-end retail.
- Dining and nightlife: Multiple bars and restaurants with views overlooking the lagoon.
- Beyond the Board: Guests can enjoy pickleball courts, a pump track for skating, and wellness facilities including yoga and hot tubs.
When does DSRT Surf open?
DSRT Surf is currently under construction and is slated for a phased opening starting this summer. As one of the few Wavegarden facilities on the West Coast, it is expected to be a major player in the “surf tourism” industry.
