California’s iconic landscapes range from towering redwood forests and rugged coastlines to vast deserts and snow-capped mountains. But beneath all that beauty lies one of the state’s most defining natural features: a vast network of active fault lines. Among them, the San Andreas Fault stands out as California’s most famous seismic boundary, responsible for some of the region’s most powerful earthquakes.
Now, a new study has found that the southern part of the fault system, along with the neighboring San Jacinto Fault, has reached its highest level of tectonic stress in the last 1,000 years. The findings suggest that the faults are more heavily loaded than at any point in recorded geological history, raising concerns about the potential for a major earthquake in SoCal.
What scientists found about the San Andreas Fault system

The study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, used geological evidence, displaced sediment records, and earthquake history, so researchers could create a physics-based model to estimate how stress has accumulated and been released over time.
Their results suggest multiple fault segments are now experiencing stress levels equal to or greater than any seen over the last thousand years. According to lead author Liliane Burkhard, “The system is critically stressed,” with conditions that could allow a rupture to jump between fault systems through Cajon Pass, potentially creating a much larger earthquake than a single-fault event.
Areas that could be affected include Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, and the Coachella Valley.
Will SoCal have a major earthquake soon?

While the study highlights an elevated level of seismic risk, researchers are careful not to suggest that a major earthquake is imminent.
The timing of any future rupture remains unknown. Still, scientists say understanding these possible earthquake scenarios is critical for infrastructure planning, emergency preparedness, and hazard assessments in one of the nation’s most densely populated regions.
