Summer is starting to wind down, but there are still a few weeks left to make the most of Southern California’s blue skies, fresh alpine air, and cooler mountain temperatures. While Big Bear remains a beloved local favorite, it can get especially busy this time of year.
And for travelers trying to keep a weekend getaway budget-friendly, there’s another mountain town worth putting on the radar: Crestline.
Meet Crestline, a laid-back mountain escape above San Bernardino
Tucked into the San Bernardino Mountains, Crestline sits more than 4,500 feet above sea level and is reached via the scenic Rim of the World route, which climbs nearly 3,500 feet from the San Bernardino area. The journey leads to a small mountain community surrounded by forest, hiking trails and Lake Gregory, an 84-acre reservoir at the heart of town.
The quaint community has a distinctly low-key atmosphere, with rustic cabins, locally owned restaurants and a walkable downtown that feels worlds away from the city. It also offers plenty of outdoor activities, making it an easy alternative for anyone looking for a mountain escape without heading all the way to Big Bear.
Spend the day on the lake or exploring the mountains
Lake Gregory is the obvious starting point, especially on a warm day. Depending on the season, visitors can swim, kayak, canoe, fish, paddleboard, or simply stroll around the shoreline. There’s also a large inflatable waterpark for those who prefer their lake day with a little more action.
For a hike, the Heart Rock Trail Loop covers less than two miles and leads to a heart-shaped opening beside a 25-foot waterfall. More adventurous visitors can explore OHV roads through the surrounding San Bernardino National Forest or watch paragliders launch from Crestline Launch.
Lake Gregory has also added new floating cabanas and a dock this summer, giving visitors a shaded spot to relax right on the water. The cabanas offer views of the lake and the inflatable waterpark, making them a good option for groups looking to turn a quick swim into a full day by the water.

According to Travel + Leisure, Stockade Grub & Whiskey serves hearty comfort food, while Hortencia’s at the Cliffhanger pairs dishes like steak fajitas and shrimp tacos with sweeping San Bernardino Valley views. For coffee and pastries, stop by Higher Grounds Coffee House, or visit Goodwin & Sons Market for its deli, bakery, and vintage-style soda fountain.
For an overnight stay, The North Shore Inn sits along Lake Gregory and features rustic cabin-style rooms, while Crest Lodge Historic Mountain Inn offers a historic setting with cabins and cottages.
How to get there from L.A.
Crestline is about 72 miles from L.A. and takes around 1.5 hours to reach by car, depending on traffic. From L.A., take I-210 East toward San Bernardino, then follow Highway 18 into the San Bernardino Mountains.
