SoCal is a car-first region, where major arteries such as the 101 and the 405 connect communities across a sprawling metropolitan area. But few routes combine everyday importance with coastal scenery quite like the PCH, one of California’s most iconic roadways.
Now, this key corridor is set to experience lane reductions starting next week as Caltrans launches a massive pavement rehabilitation project in Malibu.
When and where will PCH lane reductions begin

According to Caltrans, construction over the PCH is set to begin on October 27, 2026 (weather permitting), with drivers bracing for the following:
- 🕕 Construction hours: Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- 📍 Location: PCH between Malibu Lagoon and the Ventura County line.
- 📅 Duration: Fall 2026 through winter 2029-2030.
- 🚧 Traffic impacts: Lane reductions, traffic control, and potential delays during construction hours.
While Caltrans has not announced a schedule of specific lane closures for individual sections, it has confirmed that at least one lane will remain open in each direction while work is underway. Full road closures are not planned for this project, although motorists should expect slower travel and consider alternate routes when possible.
The work is weather-dependent, and schedules may change. Nearby residents and businesses may also experience construction noise, vibrations, and pavement grinding. Drivers can check Caltrans QuickMap for real-time traffic conditions and road alerts.
PCH $69 million pavement project

The rehabilitation project is designed to extend the life of the highway’s pavement and improve ride quality, while upgrading infrastructure for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. The work will rehabilitate approximately 63 lane miles of roadway.
The improvements will include pavement repairs, upgraded curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), guardrail improvements, updated signage and road technology, better roadway lighting, traffic signal upgrades, and fresh pavement striping.
