As temperatures rise, California’s great outdoors are calling! From sprawling beaches to alpine escapes, several destinations across the state are welcoming visitors back just in time for peak adventure season.
Now, another major reopening is giving campers, boaters, anglers, and day-trippers a reason to plan a last-minute getaway. As shared by the U.S. Forest Service, several popular recreation facilities within Sierra National Forest are reopening ahead of Father’s Day weekend.
Sierra National Forest recreation sites are reopening
Following months of repairs, inspections, and rehabilitation work, the agency announced that Kinnikinnick Campground (closed back in July 2025) and the Florence Lake Picnic Area are once again open to visitors, while the Florence Lake day-use facilities (including the picnic and day-use area, boat ramp, and parking areas) were officially cleared for public use on June 17.
The reopening also includes the Mammoth Pool Boat Ramp, which has been transferred back to the Forest Service after a major rehabilitation project completed in partnership with Southern California Edison.
The reopenings mark a significant step in ongoing efforts to restore public access throughout Sierra National Forest after multiple closures impacted recreation sites, roads, and campgrounds in recent years.

Spanning more than 1.3 million acres along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, Sierra National Forest is a summertime paradise known for its mountain lakes, towering pine forests, scenic drives, and endless outdoor recreation opportunities.
Summer is one of the best times to visit, with warm daytime temperatures, access to high-elevation areas that are often snow-covered for much of the year, and prime conditions for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping.
The forest also serves as a gateway to some of California’s most spectacular wilderness areas, including the Ansel Adams Wilderness and trail connections to the famed John Muir Trail.
