Just a short drive from Los Angeles, one of the region’s most beloved Independence Day traditions is returning with an extra-special edition that promises an unforgettable night on the waterfront.
San Diego’s Big Bay Boom returns on Friday, July 4, with 6,000 fireworks launched simultaneously from four barges across San Diego Bay during an 18-minute show, all synchronized to a custom musical soundtrack. Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to gather along the shoreline to watch the dazzling display.
How to get to San Diego’s Big Bay Boom
If you’re planning to make the trip from Los Angeles, arriving early is highly recommended. Parking lots and garages near the waterfront typically fill up well before the fireworks begin, although the Port of San Diego will offer free parking at its waterfront meters and pay stations, subject to posted time limits.
Visitors can also reserve parking through ParkWhiz or SpotHero. To avoid traffic altogether, MTS will provide expanded trolley, train, and bus service, while COASTER trains offer a convenient option for travelers coming from coastal North County communities.
Keep in mind that alcohol, tobacco, vaping, and drones are prohibited along the waterfront. Boaters planning to watch from the bay must remain at least 1,000 feet away from the fireworks barges and follow safety instructions from patrol boats.
