Big news for anyone who loves the outdoors: public parks everywhere are getting a massive glow-up. And just in time for peak summer, El Capitán State Beach is finally throwing open its gates tomorrow, Tuesday, June 23, after a 18-month makeover.
As the gates unlock tomorrow morning, travelers will be able to enjoy the modernized facility alongside a unique, phased rollout for summer access.
About El Capitán State Beach
El Capitán State Beach encompasses 2,634 acres of coastal woodlands, beaches, and inland wilderness.
- Facilities: The park features a large campground (about 130+ campsites) on the bluffs, a camp store, indoor/outdoor showers, and day-use picnic areas.
- Surfing & Swimming: El Capitán Point features a popular right-hand point break that is excellent for surfers
- Hiking & Exploring: The park features trails that appeal to all activity levels.
What’s New? The major Infrastructure Upgrades
The closure, which began in January 2025, allowed California State Parks to execute the El Capitán Entrance Improvements Project. The multi-million-dollar initiative was designed to address aging infrastructure, improve public safety, and increase the park’s long-term climate resilience.
When you drive through the gates this summer, you will notice several key upgrades:
- A New Fish-Friendly Bridge: A brand-new bridge now spans El Capitán Creek, created to make it easier for local fish species to migrate through the corridor.
- Reconstructed Entrance Road: Widened and improved to optimize traffic flow and reduce the notorious vehicle queues that back up on summer weekends.
- Accessible Entrance Kiosk: A fully accessible kiosk designed to speed up visitor check-ins.
- Safer Pedestrian Routes: Enhanced walking paths throughout the main entrance corridor to better separate foot traffic from vehicles.
The Official Reopening Timeline

Because the park is opening right in the middle of the peak summer season, access is being rolled out in phases.
- June 23: Entrance road and day-use areas open at 8:00 AM.
- Campground opens for first-come, first-served camping.
- Pedestrian access fully restores.
- Future summer reservations launch on ReserveCalifornia.com.
- June 29: Officially reserved camping dates begin.
- Fall 2026: The new permanent entrance trail is anticipated to be 100% complete.
El Capitán has missed its travelers, and tomorrow, the state park is finally ready to welcome everyone home.
